COURSE SYNOPSIS Introduction to Non-verbal Communication: Students will be introduced to theories involving non-verbal communication and the history of the research in the field. This basic background is an essential building tool that the remainder of the class will utilize in understanding context and baseline behavior in the analysis of body language. Body Language as a Means of Communication: Humans utilize four very specific communication techniques in the interaction with others. This block of instruction will identify these areas and explore the relationship between them and the significance in the understanding of body language. Understanding the Need for Body Language and Subconscious Communication® The idea of communication using the power of the subconscious mind is identified and students are instructed as to the strength the mind possesses in sending out mixed signals and overcoming ulterior motives. This block of instruction builds upon the previous two sessions so as to acquaint the students with the importance of body language for rapport building, hidden motives, and deception detection. Environmental Considerations in the Evaluation of Body Language: The breakdown of the specific factors that must be considered when evaluating, using, or understanding body language begins with the exploration of environmental factors that will assist or inhibit one’s ability to accurately apply context and the establishment of baseline behavior. Perceptions and Body Language: Continuing the theme of factors that influence the interpretation of body language the topic of perceptions and biases are examined as they pertain to the topic. Proxemics and Body Language: Proxemics and the effective use of space is presented to the student so that an understanding of spatial concept and territorial zones are considered when evaluating the posture of others, Practical exercise included. Physical Appearance and Personal factors and Body Language One’s physical appearance and other personal factors that influence the meaning of body language or the use of non-verbal communication is discussed in relation to perception and equally important reverse perception which was previously defined. Practical Exercise and Discussion: Video and classroom participation occurs in this last session of the day to re-emphasize the day’s topics and to prepare for the information to follow. Class discussion follows.
Day Two Course Synopsis Facial Gestures and Human Emotions: Very specific evaluation and interpretation begins with this section of instruction of reading facial expressions and identifying the thirty most significant human emotions. Further evaluation will include dimensional considerations and facial recognition factors. A comprehensive class exercise will test the students understanding and application of this material. Eye Movement and Gaze Behavior: The eyes have been called the “mirrors of the soul.” In this comprehensive evaluation of measured eye behavior and the functions of eye movement the student is instructed on critical areas of interpretation in the overall analysis of communication meaning. A detailed analysis of eye accessing cues will be explored as they relate to rapport building and deception detection. Gestures Involving the Torso: Moving from the head to the torso of the human body the attention is now turned to the examination of body language involving the chest, stomach, and back. Body motion in communication analysis is explored during this presentation. Gestures of the Arms and Hands: Our hands are expressive in the evaluation of body language and the emotional meanings of communication. In this segment, very distinct gestures of the hands are examined. This analysis will include the significance of hand shakes and the application in rapport building and interpersonal relationships. Practical Exercise and Discussion: Video and classroom participation occurs in this last session of the day to re-emphasize the day’s topics and to prepare for the information to follow. Class discussion follows.
Day Three Course Synopsis Tactile Communication: Day three begins with the study of tactile communication and it’s importance in conveying messages, expressing emotions, or how it influences or can alter one’s interpretation of the interaction with others. Gestures of the Legs and Feet: Just as it was imperative to examine very explicit gestures of the arms and hands and the meanings in which they communicate it is equally critical in the overall analysis of posture to probe the messages of the legs and feet in communication evaluation. We accomplish this goal during this session of instruction.
Special Considerations When Evaluating Body Language: Having completed the lion’s share of the presentation on the interpretation of non-verbal communication our attention now turns to particular application of such factors as gender, the elderly, children, and other circumstances that are critical in the reading of body language. Gestures of Threat or Violence: (Law Enforcement Classes Only) In this last section of study, for the law enforcement only classes, the presentation of gestures of threat, violence, or escape are presented in detail as they relate to officer safety and the articulation of the use of force continuum. Gestures for Sales, Influence, and Impression Management: (Corporate Presentations) During our presentations for corporate employees, non-law enforcement, we substitute this three hour block of instruction from threatening gestures to those most commonly found in a corporate workplace. These gestures will spotlight body language for interpretation in job interviews, developing credibility, sustaining interest, and social contexts. Practical Exercise and Discussion: Video and classroom participation occurs in this last session of the day to re-emphasize the day’s topics. Post Test, Course Critiques, and Class Dismissal: In this closure of the course the students take a post test and are given the opportunity to complete a course critique of their experience. The class is concluded with a last session of student questions or comments.
